Yoga...

The sanskrit word yoga has many meanings, and is derived from the Sanskrit root "yuj", meaning "to control", "to yoke" or "to unite."
Yoga can be a uniting of movement, breath and consciousness. The goal of yoga is to bring self-transcendence, or enlightenment, through physical, mental and spiritual health.

Therapeutic Yoga

Therapeutic Yoga is a remedy for the challenge of these stressful times. The practice creates a deeply rejuvenating experience through the many postures that literally hold you as you let go. It is in this deep letting go that you can reach a sweet calm, a response that allows the innate intelligence of the body to restore balance and well -being. By moving into stillness through the layers of the body, emotions and thoughts, you find at your core a sense of quiet connection: you return to your natural condition of ease and peace. This is the essence of yoga.

This practice will involve a series of postures to facilitate opening in the myofascial layers of the muscle. Fascia is a layer of tight connective tissue that encapsulates the muscle. When the fascia layer is tight or stressed the whole muscle becomes constricted and tight. If we open up the fascia layer, we can release more effectively the layers of muscle.

Very often when someone has a long-standing chronic issue such as pain, tightness, or tension, the person becomes used to it. It has been there for so long that it has become as much a way of life as getting up and going to bed. However . . . although the person is used to it, he or she still feels limited by it. It gets in the way of life -- from the ordinary (walking up stairs, lifting groceries, concentrating at work) to the fun (skiing, hiking, walking, golfing, playing with your kids, participating in hobbies) to the extraordinary (experiencing your “best” race or your “best” day).

Know that if you are injured or ill, you can experience your body and your abilities differently. Very differently. Know that no matter your age, ability, athletic nature, state of injury, or illness, your body can change.

Hatha Yoga

The Practice of Hatha yoga balances mind and body via physical postures or "asanas", purification practices, controlled breathing or meditation techniques, and the calming of the mind through relaxation and meditation.

In this practice you will be guided gently through a series of asanas or postures which increase flexibility, strength and balance in the body. This practice will also help you gain control of and clear the mind in preparation for meditation in the pursuit of enlightenment.

Hatha Yoga is a system of yoga introduced by Yogi Swatmarama, a compiler of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. Hatha Yoga is used as a  preparatory stage of physical purification for the practice of meditation.

The word Hatha is a compound of the words Ha and Tha meaning sun and moon.  Yoga means to yoke, or to join things together, hence hatha yoga is meant to join together sun (masculine, active) energy with the moon (feminine, receptive) energy, thus producing balance and greater power in an individual.
